Dowsers or Dousers are mechanical dimmers for lights which cannot be electrically dimmed. The mechanical dimmer can take on of two forms: A shutter which is like a venetian blind, or an iris much like the iris in a camera. The design of the Wybron Iris was originally concieved by  George Izenour for a project in the early '50s.
